433 Equity Crowdfunding campaigns successfully raised £332 million in 2020 up from 403 campaigns in 2019. This is the highest number of campaigns ever and the second largest amount of capital raised in any one year.
But this record was achieved with the assistance from the UK government’s Future Fund which accounted for 11% of all campaigns last year.
Some interesting points to note:
- All of this year record-breaking campaigns were conducted on Crowdcube with:
Largest campaign by capital raised: Chip reaching £11m
Largest campaign by number of investors: Moneybox attracting 16,735 crowdfunders
Largest campaign by pre-money valuation: what3words valued at £150m - The majority of the capital was raised via Crowdcube (50%) where 7 of the top 10 largest campaigns took place (vs. 44% for Seedrs and 6% for other platforms) but the two main platforms raised a similar number of campaigns (48% on Seedrs; 47% on Crowdcube and 5% on other platforms)
- 47 Crowdfunding campaigns have raised £62 million in conjunction with the UK government’s Future Fund. Seedrs dominated the Future Fund fundraising push, as 85% of the campaigns were listed on the Seedrs platform raising 71% of the aggregate capital.
- London received by far the largest share of equity crowdfunding with 47% of this year campaigns and 54% of the capital invested in London-based companies. Edinburgh took second place and Cambridge third.
